To realize the dream of a developed and self-dependent rural community that is empowered to achieve Gram Swaraj
What We Do
01. Community Health
GPS recognizes that women’s health is severely affected by the lack of effective policies and appropriate services especially in maternal healthcare and for determinants of health. Through community mobilization, monitoring, case documentation, capacity-building, campaigns, and advocacy with service providers and the media, the maternal health and rights programme seeks to make a change in the ground realities in India.
GPS investigates the reasons behind poor maternal health indicators and experiences, engages in advocacy to hold the government accountable for creating and implementing effective maternal health policies, and builds the capacity of underserved and marginalised women to campaign for their rights to accessible and quality maternal health services and entitlements such as nutrition, social security, livelihood, personal safety, sanitation, and safe water.
Objectives
Increasing the ‘voice’ of marginalized women for health planning, in programme monitoring, and in demanding accountability for their right to health. Informing local and national policy makers and other stakeholders including the media about the perspectives and experiences of poor women vis-à-vis health system.
02.Girl Icon Programme
GPS implemented Girl Icon Fellowship Programme in 12 blocks of Azamgarh district with partnership of Milaan Foundation for building a national movement to empower girls in by collectivizing them at the grassroots, engaging and building capacities of community-based organizations, instigating collective social action in communities and collaborative advocacy campaign to amplify voices of change. We believe in the power of girl to be agents of change.
03.Advocacy for Public Sector Services
Access to safe abortion services is an important matter of reproductive rights of women for leading a healthy life. In almost all the districts of Uttar Pradesh, there is lack of awareness and knowledge among communities regarding access to safe abortion services. Often it is seen that women suffer from unwanted or unplanned pregnancy due to multiple reasons and they need access to safe abortion services. The reasons behind unintended or unplanned pregnancy are unavailability of contraceptives, failure of sterilization, restricting the reproductive capacity etc. Many times, unwed adolescent girls become pregnant due rape and other reasons, and they need abortion care. In such situation, women want to avail safe abortion services but due to stigma and myths related with abortions, they get helpless to choose unsafe abortion services putting their lives in risk.
There is a widespread perception regarding abortion in the community that it is a sin and a murder. So, women don’t want to disclose it in the society and secretly terminate their pregnancy. Hence, they suffer from physical and mental agony and economic loss. Families pressurise women to give birth to the child and don’t allow abortion. In many families, women that have undergone abortion are discriminated. During abortion many women suffer from complications. When there is excessive loss of blood then they go to hospital either with ASHA or with family members and suffer from huge economic loss. Even today, abortion is considered as a stigma and a sin. There is a lack of awareness among women regarding Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and they don’t consider abortion as their right.
